A bannister is just screaming to be decorated for Xmas. I have seen so many in the movies, a favourite Xmas bannister moment would have to be Miracle on 34th Street. I found the DVD in Big W for only $12 this week, bonus it also has the original on the disc. The original was 1947, the remake 1994.
So the night before last we watched it, with all the cliches, laughed at everyones broken brown teeth, you wouldn’t see that in a movie any more would you? It was so sickly and sweet but wouldn’t have it any other way.
Back to the bannister, I am aiming for a natural Australian Xmas look which is easy as I am in love with the colour yellow, like the Golden Wattyl.
Last year I managed to snag the very last Xmas garland from the Xmas shop in Myaree, unfortunately the one and only garland didn’t go far. I was very determined this year to get in early and hunter and gatherer more. So back I go for two more, I had help, Lucas (Brittany’s partner) cable tied them to the bannister for me. Of course you guessed it not enough.
You just know I have been down this path before don’t you. Back I go for a couple more garlands and there I was, beside myself, as they had the imitation golden Wattyl, that was kind of half hidden but my beady eyes spotted them, the bucket was jam packed with them (not for long).
I bought 5 pieces, plenty thought I. I wished the lovely ladies in the store a Merry Xmas, they said, ‘thanks we will see you soon’ Not till next year, said I.
Mistake number 2, should have kept my mouth shut as it does tend to run away without me. I got home and laid the Golden Wattyl over the garlands and of course it didn’t go as far as I thought.

So I rang the lovely ladies and said it’s me again I need more please please put 3 aside for me. The next day in I go, race home, layer them on the garlands, guess what still not enough.
By this stage I was too embarrassed to go again so I sent Brittany, as it would have been my fourth time in the store after stating ‘that I would not be back again this year’.
Also I didn’t use the original garland as it didn’t match the new ones so I found a new Xmas home for it, on top of the dresser, and of course that needed Wattyl to!
|Just enough, or do I now need lights, I am thinking that’s a yes|
- $100 for the garlands
- $150 for the Golden Wattyl
A total of $250 to decorate the bannister, don’t you just love Xmas
There is more to the bannister in the next post xx
