I see so often the title of my post #Iamwriting on other sites and now I can say confidently that I get it, at last.
I attended my second writing workshop at the Fremantle Arts Centre for OOTA writers, not so intimidating this time as there were a mere 7 other writers (yes I know getting carried away with myself_writer) I was made to feel very welcome by Helen Hagemann and I knew from the moment I entered that room that I could learn something here. Helen came straight over and shook my hand and introduced me to the others, all our eyes met, so friendly. I could feel that fear of being judged wasn’t going to happen.
We listened, we shared, we acknowledged and I learnt
We wrote from prompts, then being the newbie I was asked to read what I wrote.
Oh, these poor people, I am of the sink or swim variety, jump in with two feet first, fake it till you make it, type of gal.
Being so comfortable in amongst this group, and thanks to my friend Moira I found me some courage to read what I wrote. Firstly warning that I was not a writer, they looked a little horrified to be truthful. But I wasn’t about to set myself up to fail.
Helen assumed I was a writer as she could see that I had written a couple of pages for the prompt. The look on poor Helen’s face after I said that I would read but that I had doubts as I wasn’t a writer, I didn’t say I was a blogger though, maybe that counts.
I plunged in with a slightly wavering voice, stammered a wee bit as I couldn’t read my scribble. Note to self to take laptop (I like reading with 1.5 space between the lines, besides, word corrects my spelling mistakes amongst other things).
They listened, they laughed, and said I was good
Ahhh I am in love with my writing group, no not just because they liked what I wrote, but that I will be learning.
We talked some more after class ended and the subject came up, the subject I hate about needing to know the rules before you can break them (grammar). I said that my friend Louise told me precisely that same thing. Eyes lit up and the penny dropped. They all know and admire my friend Louise Allen Writer so that gave me some cred.
If I don’t enter in an upcoming competition what I have now edited of my prompt I will post it here, so you can judge for yourselves. Look at me entered one competition and am now seeking another. What is the world coming to.
ps. I have been away for 12 days, so much to tell next time, a post each for Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. In that time away from my blog I have 359 spam emails, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE! Yes I know it’s automated generated but really!
